Five years ago, on the eve of his 21st birthday, Sam Crowley disappeared. His mother Ro had cooked his favourite meal - lasagne - and she and Griff, Sam's father, had sat at the table as the lasagne grew cold, the hours passed, and the shine of a celebration became the darkest of fears. Sam's small red car was found at the turn-off to three deserted houses: a weatherboard farmhouse, an ivy cottage, a stone bungalow. Sam had visited all three houses but there was no other sign of what had happened to him. The mystery of Sam's disappearance sent tremors through the local community and broke his family apart. Five long years later, Ro has returned for Sam's annual memorial. What she finds is a ghost town whose local residents have been forced out by the coal mine on its outskirts. As Ro once again studies the notes Sam left behind - a map of unanswered questions and suspicions - she begins to peel back the layers of the town and its people. Because someone in Carralon Ridge knows what happened to Sam. And Ro and Griff want answers.
